What Causes Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is caused by a difference involving chromosomes.
Typically, humans have 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs. Most people with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes, because there is an extra copy of chromosome 21.
This additional genetic material affects the way the body and brain develop and results in the characteristics associated with Down syndrome.
